“New Monasticism” describes a Christian community movement that the Spirit has been stirring for nearly 80 years, often beneath the radar of traditional churches. In recent years, however, young people have been attracted to new monastic community by the thousands. What does this mean for today’s church? And what does the church have to offer these communities? This course explores the practices of new monastic communities, their roots in Scripture, and possibilities for exchange between churches and communities. Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove is a member of Rutba House, a new monastic community of hospitality, peacemaking, and discipleship in Durham, North Carolina. He is the author of Free to Be Bound (NavPress) and New Monasticism (Brazos). He is a regular contributor to PRISM Magazine and the ePistle. This workshop/session is being offered as part of the Spirituality & Social Justice Institute at Galilee Centre. |
